Bear Lee There
Bear Lee - There
(To see pics in larger size, click and it will open in a new window or tab, depending on your configuration.)
We have a lot of wildlife around here; deer frequent the place and are seen quite regularly in the neighborhood, as a matter of fact this pic is from our backyard last year.
We have also had a fox and a family of raccoons travel leisurely through our yard. In the field near an elementary school about half a mile from the house we saw a coyote, then one night about a block away as we were coming home from church we saw a coyote.
A couple of weeks ago we were driving on the main road not far from our house, Cheyenne Meadows, where the elementary school, Fox Meadows, is and as we passed the field behind the apartments just before you get to the school, Margaret said, "Look, there's a bear on the hill there." I did a U-ey in the mini-van so I could get a better look and told her to get the camera out of the glove compartment. Well, Bears (Black Bears, not Grizzlies, there are supposedly no Grizzlies in Colorado) will, as a general rule, not attack a human but will avoid an encounter so as soon as I jumped out with the intention of getting a couple of shots off, he just started trundling away. The battery door on the camera is broken so all I got were these two of his backside. Warning, the following pictures contain images of a bear behind.

Wearin' the Black Hat
Being the Dad Guy, I get to wear the black hat. It's part of the job and you dads all know, even if you are too poor or aren't stylish enough to own a real black hat, it's in the manual, sometimes you have to be the bad guy. Sometimes you get to be the bad guy and sometimes you have to be the bad guy.

Farewell To A Furry Friend
(In case you don't know about Roo Boom-Boom Thiel I added the original article to the archives here http://herbthiel.com/index.php?itemid=39 )
Well, the last couple of days have been kind of sad around here. We came home from church late in the evening Wednesday and Abi went to let Roo out for his late-evening stroll to do the Bunny-Hop, but, he didn't jump out and tug on his mommy's skirt like he usually was wont to do. He didn't seem to be moving. He wasn't. Roo was dead and had been for a few hours. He probably died while we were at church. As you know, I may not be an animal rights nut like some, but I love and care about critters and believe they should be part of the family (they must know their place, however) if you are going to keep them. And Roo was. He would play tag with the cats and follow Abi around and crawl under her skirt and if he didn't think she was paying him enough attention he would pull on the back of her skirt. Very curious and very intelligent.
There are some times when a person just needs someone to hold them and let them cry so they can carry on. Discussion is at a minimum because there seems to be nothing to say. She felt some relief in the fact that she had always taken good, loving care of him and he recently has gotten more and more opportunities to get out and hop around. "But daddy, I don't want him to get thrown in the trash or taken to the pound or the vet to be disposed of. I want him to be buried." "Okay."
Now I wonder what I am going to do with him. We have been having cold nights here so I put him in a cardboard box and set him in the garage until morning. Fortunately for me, the ground was not frozen too hard yet, so yesterday I dug a deep hole in the back yard and we said goodbye to the big old lovable long-eared galoot.
In other news, I think I may have fixed the comment problem some people were having. The "Bad Behavior" anti-spam plug-in was exhibiting bad behavior. Updated that. I am working on a story about commercial-mas also. A telling from Joseph's perspective. Also have to post some pics from Savannahs 3rd birthday! Our little 1 lb 12 oz miracle is 3, now.
Remember, the Good Book says, "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast..."

The Bunny
NEVER give a pet to a child without getting permission from the kid's parents first. Both of 'em, if applicable.
Reading Abby Normal's blog entry of 7/14/05, Pet Peeves, I left a comment about the style of cage I like for small animals, which elicited the question about how we came to have a bunny. Pictures of him are here in the gallery. He is 5 years old and weighs about 10 - 12 pounds.
My daughter Abby, (not to be confused, of course, with AbbyNormal) had always dreamed of having a big white bunny with floppy ears. He would be so cute and cuddly and she would always love him and take care of him and the big mean dad guy (that's me) would always say, "No." The cute little blonde thing (she was 9 at the time) would be disappointed, but she managed, as children are wont to do, to get over it. Oh, every once in a while we would hear about it, but it kind of came to be an accepted fact of life that a bunny wasn't in anyone's near future.
"Besides," said the big mean dad guy, "we don't have a place for a bunny. Let daddy read you a book about bunnies." And she was still at the age where I could sometimes distract her by reading "Guess How Much I Love You" to her.
*I think this is where the piano player plays a minor chord to indicate the villain has just entered the scene.*

Latest News
Sorry i haven't been keeping you as up-to-date as i should. It has been busy around here these last few days. Thanks to God for helping President Bush and thanks to the American people for getting out and voting in record numbers. Carter e-mailed me the county-by-county map from this year from www.newsmax.com and it is even more red than last time.
Well, there was some sadness at our house. Abby's birds died. First, Blue Sky, who was around 8 (which is old for a parakeet) developed what appeared to be a tumor and died. When they took him out of the cage, Rainbow started freaking out and screeching going nuts. Tabitha took Rainbow out, held him, and tried to calm him down, but he just kept trying to bite her. When he stopped it was because he had died too. Abby was sad. Even though she had been through this before, and she knew the old one was sick, it was still a loss.
So, off we went to PetSmart and looked at birds, but none really had an outstanding personality or coloring so we went to Pet City at Citadel Mall and this one pretty white one just kept looking at Abby and would follow Tabitha's finger on the glass and there was another one that was really feisty as well. So now we have Professor Clear Water, who is mostly white with a bright blue patch on his back and one whose tentative name is Majestic Mountain, but I am calling the old curmudgeon. He has more of a grayish color and while the white one wants to sit on your finger or walk around on your shoulder, he wants to bite at you and doesn't seem as playful. He likes to sing, though.
We had just returned from going with Ben and Isabel to pick out a crib. They picked out one that can be changed into a toddler bed then a regular bed as time goes by. Grandma bought them a nice bedroom set for the baby with Baby Snoopy, and his sister Belle and a couple of his other brothers. She is due February 11 so she is getting stuff ready now. She is hoping for January 28 as that is her mom and dad's anniversary but i am (secretly, don't tell them, even though they read this once in a while) hoping for February 6, which is my birthday.
Sorry I haven't kept up with this, but just so you guys all know, I am working on a couple of projects and a couple of pieces for posting on here, i just haven't gotten to finishing anything yet.

Steenking Dog II & Etc.
Even the writing board on my desk was cleared off! Unbelievable that any part of my desk would get cleaned, but it really did happen that way. Now, I plan to clean it off one of these days, but it is so hard to know where to start. Different people have nagged me about it at different times and I really will get it done. Ashley had come over once to help me, but she didn't take the 3 or 4 days necessary. I'm not messy, just organizationally challenged.
Snoopy's 2-can tomato juice bath was a success so we have a normal smelling house again.
Another exciting thing to me was that when I sent out an e-mail to everyone about my 'blog, I heard back from people I hadn't heard from in a long time.
Well, 'tis Sunday School today and I think that the honorable and knowledgeable Professor Fritz Von Googleheimer will explain the difference between clean and unclean animals in preparation for the story of Cornelius. I love the professor; he is one of my favorite characters. I like them all, really. Anyway, I have to get going, folks, so long and thanks for all the fish, er, thanks for reading.
