Dust Storm In Iraq

Category: Jim or Military
Posted by: Herb

(When I was at NTC it got to be like this sometimes.)

Here are a few pictures of a recent dust storm that we had. These pictures were taken during lunch time, about 12:30pm. The sun was almost completely blocked out by the dust and sand. You can taste the dirt in the air when you breath, even indoors. It makes life a little more miserable than it already is. The photos were taken from a balcony. The last photo was taken just as the storm started to come into the area.

Second Recent E-Mail From Jim

You may notice that Jimmy always seems to have a thousand kids hanging around him. It isn't just the uniform, he's always had this magnetism that has made kids love him, when he was a Sunday School teacher, when he worked at an institution for troubled kids, when he worked in the Church School, with his own kids, he's always one of their favorites and along with everything else he does to keep the bad guys from blowing us up, he is building a rapport with the future of an entire country.

Jim On Patrol

From Jim's E-Mail of 122107.  If you knew how well he interacts with kids (of all ages) you would doubly appreciate some of these pictures.

Family and Friends,

Here are some more pictures from Iraq. I took these pictures on one of the presence patrols that we conducted in a southern Baghdad neighborhood. Sniper, ambush, and IED/EFP threats have been relatively low in this area but we are constantly on the look out for suspicious activity. I observe the roadways with a watchful eye wondering when the next IED/EFP will explode and take its toll on U.S. soldiers. We look for any sign or indicator that would lead us to believe that an IED would be in the area. We have sophisticated jamming equipment and electronic countermeasures to counter the IED threat. Sometimes it is effective and other times it does not help. It depends on the emplacement and type of trigger method the bomb maker has used.

I have found the Iraqi people to be quite interesting. Their culture is unlike any that I have encountered before.

Jim The Good Guy

I always feel privileged to know some of the "Good Guys" ; the guys in the white hats, or better yet the Black Stetsons, Blue Police Hats or Green Berets. I have often told you about Carter, but another friend of mine who is also a real American Hero is Jim, with the Colorado National Guard Special Forces unit. Besides that, he is also a respected officer in the Colorado Springs Police Department, so at home or away, he's always risking his neck for his fellow man. We worked together in Sunday School (The Heavenly Kingdom's Special Ops?) a few years back and his energy and ability to enthrall children with tales from scripture as well as tales from his own life was amazing. He started out as a young punk gangster but God got a hold of his life and he is quite the opposite of what he was and over the years I have watched him grow and change and get married and have some little kids of his own and feel proud of him as if he were my own son.

Anyway, he is currently in Iraq, and has sent some pictures of what he is doing and where he is living and from the recent surprise visit by the governor of Colorado, Bill Ritter. The pics are posted in the photo album as well and the files are small so hopefully it won't take too long to load.

Here is a link to a pretty hoo-ah SF site, containing the "Special Forces Prayer"
